Labeled as an Underground Anime Magazine?

Posted by Devin

Is Tokyopop's new Manga a Magazine? What means it’s a magazine? Recent magazines such as The Fader and Inked are created by promotional and design agencies, and indeed they look like the real thing. None of them seem to have editorial credibility from their business interest, with plenty of edit/advertisering crossovers. Mentioned in Brandweek this week was the lumping of Tokyopop’s Manga magazine (formally Takuhai) as the same as the above. Since Tokyopop is not selling their magazine but their giving more than 100,000 copies away via mail or at bookstores/comic shops, it doesn’t have to worry about messy audits and making sure customers are asking for a copy. As quoted from the Brandweek article, these recent ‘magazines’ are not having a problem with obtaining new advertisers either. Clearly, Manga takes a different tact than ADV’s Newtype USA which is audited by ABC like other traditional magazines.

Ever 3-5 days a week I’ll update a tidbit of news and market analysis of this new ‘space’ that has been long neglected by traditional media and market research media firms. If you have any comments, drop me at e-mail at from our about page. Thanks—
